7G LATIN EXAM, SUMMER TERM 2010

THE EXAM

The exam will be a CE Paper (Level 3) and will consist of the following:

• A Latin passage, approximately 8 lines long with English comprehension questions. This passage should not be translated

• A passage of Latin approximately 10 lines long to be translated in to English

• A Latin passage, approximately 8 lines long with 6 grammar questions to answer about the passage. This passage should not be translated
• These will include two sentences to translate from English into Latin.

You will get some additional help (vocab and grammar) in the exam because we have not covered all of the Level 3 syllabus yet

WHAT TO REVISE

• You should revise as much vocab as possible from your Level 1 and Level 2 Vocab lists

• The future, perfect, imperfect and pluperfect tenses of AMO and SUM-grammar booklet, p2-3

• The Perfect and Pluperfect Passive, grammar  booklet,  p 4-5

• e.g. postquam haec res nuntiata est=after this thing has been announced

• puellae laudatae erant=the girls had been praised

• Participles, grammar  booklet, p 6-7

These are a cross between a verb and an adjective and so must agree with the noun which they are describing:

Present:

These decline like “REX” (3^rd Declension) and tend to have ns at the end or nt in the middle of the word e.g.

vir sedens fessus erat=the sitting man was tired

femina virum sedentem vidit=the woman saw the man sitting

Perfect Participle Passive (PPP)

These decline like “PUELLA, DOMINUS and BELLUM” (1^st and 2^nd Declension) and are formed from the 4^th Principal Part of a verb e.g.

amo, amare, amavi, amatum = “having been loved” or just “loved”

e.g. puella ab matre amata, matri donum dedit =the girl, loved by her mother, gave her mother a present

Watch out for irregular verbs e.g.

mitto, mittere, misi, missum= “having been sent” or just “sent”

e.g. servi, ab domino missi, epistulam regi dederunt=the slaves, sent by their master, gave a letter to the king
