6H/6M LATIN EXAM, SUMMER TERM 2009 

THE EXAM

The exam will be a simplified Common Entrance Paper (Level 1) and will consist of the following:

LATIN

• A Latin passage, approximately 8 lines long with English comprehension questions. This passage should not be translated

• A passage of Latin approximately 10 lines long to be translated in to English

• A Latin passage, 5 lines long with English grammar questions. This passage should not be translated. Example questions:

a. give a verb in the imperfect tense b. Write down a feminine noun

You will get some additional vocab help in the exam because we have not covered all of the Level 1 vocab yet

ESSAY

• You will also have to write a short essay about “Life After Death”:

Note that the question has two parts. You should answer BOTH parts of the question:

Part 1: (8 marks)

Describe some of the Romans’ beliefs about Life After Death. Here are some points you could include:

• The Romans’ beliefs about the underworld e.g. the River Styx, Charon the ferryman, Cerberus (3 headed dog), the three different regions and who went to each one

· How the Romans disposed of dead bodies

• Graves and tombs, banquets for the dead relatives on the anniversary of their death

Part 2: (2 marks)

Which Underworld region do you think you would go to? Give a short reason for why you think this.

WHAT TO REVISE

LATIN

• You should revise the vocab you have learnt this term from your CE Wordlist (Level 1).

• The Present, Imperfect and Perfect verb tenses of AMO and SUM

• Parts of Speech sheet

ESSAY

Revise the Death and Burial sheet

REMEMBER: If you have lost any learning sheets you can either:

· ask Mrs Cooper or Madame Powell for a new one or
